Minnesota Medical Record Retention Law:

- * Must keep medical records for a minimum of seven years after the date of the provider's last professional service to the client, except as otherwise provided by law.
- * For a minor, the records retention period does not begin until the client reaches the age of 18, except as otherwise provided by law.

General Copying Fees:
$0.75 per page for copying patient records.
An additional $10 fee may be charged for the time spent retrieving and copying the records.
X-rays: The provider may charge the actual cost of reproducing x-rays, plus up to $10 for the time spent retrieving and copying them.
Social Security Disability Appeals:
No fees can be charged for providing copies of records requested by a patient or their authorized representative for the purpose of appealing a denial of Social Security disability income or benefits under Title II or Title XVI of the Social Security Act.
No fees can be charged to a patient who is:
Receiving public assistance.
Represented by an attorney through a civil legal services program or volunteer attorney program based on indigence.
For subsequent appeals, the patient can receive up to two medical record updates without charge if the updates contain new information not previously provided.
Exclusions:
This fee waiver does not apply to requests from units of state government involved in adjudicating Social Security disability claims.
